Duties and Responsibilities:

                A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease, and in the placement of dental implants. Periodontists are also experts in the treatment of oral inflammation. Periodontists receive extensive training in these areas, including three additional years of education beyond dental school. They are familiar with the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating periodontal disease, and are also trained in performing cosmetic periodontal procedures.

Educational Requirements:

                All dentists must have a bachelor’s degree before acceptance into an accredited dental school. Obtaining a bachelor’s degree in a science discipline such as biology, chemistry, or life science can increase changes to be acceptance into a dental school. Acceptance into an accredited dental school requires passing the Dental Acceptance Test during the junior year of undergraduate studies. Dental school typically takes an additional four years of studies. Periodontists also study for an additional two to four years after dental school.
