Duties and Responsibilities:
Genetic Counselors work with people, such as patients and
families who have disorders, or birth defects, which could have been caused by
genetics, or it was inherited. They also counsel people who are at risk for
these problems.

often:

Teach patients and families about their
conditions & how to manage their problems

Examine their family history to determine if
genetic problems were involved
Ø
Assist patients and families in determining
decisions about genetic disorders that do not interfere with their religious or
ethical values
Ø
Conduct research about genetic disorders

Teach medical professionals and the general
public about genetic disorders

Educational Requirements:
For students
who are interested in becoming a genetic counselor, it is recommended that they
take a challenging high school curriculum that emphasizes science and
mathematics.
A
master’s degree is also required, and most graduate programs ask for a strong
undergraduate background in biology, chemistry, and behavioral science. In many
states, they require genetic counselors to be certified.
